Monsters from many games in the series will make an appearance, as will many location names from other games. Specific hero characters from other games will not make an appearance, but there are plenty of reference to other Dragon Quest games that should make long time fans smile.
Yes, you could say that. This is a free building game but it is story driven, and what is built drives the progression of the story which we feel is one of the more interesting aspects of the game. As you build up your town it attracts more NPCs, but it also attracts monsters that will come to attack your town and try to destroy it. There is an ending to the story and there are major events at certain points in the story but these can be reached at any pace the player chooses. The player can only focus on completing the story and rush through the game or they can complete the story at a leisurely pace and spent a lot of time building what they want to and exploring the world. Dragon Quest Builders was designed to be played in whatever style someone chooses to.
Minecraft Dungeons is a hack & slash action-RPG in the vein of Diablo where you take a character, beat on monsters, find better gear, and use the new toys to beat on bigger and tougher monsters. The paper-thin plot is that an outcast villager was corrupted by an evil orb of power and down came the smiting, and only a hero etc etc etc. The story is “hit monsters, get loot, search out secrets,” which really is all this genre needs.
The episode also alludes to death; a lot. Considering the fact that both Olivia and Axel are completely omitted from the episode save for the prologue, there is basically no comic relief. Not that you should play a game simply for its humor, Minecraft: Story Mode has a reputation for having humor and making friendship stand above all else. While this episode does focus on friendship and how your decisions can shape the future, death always seems to be around the corner and everyone you come in contact with seems to want you to die, or at last Aiden openly expresses it. It also doesn’t help that Aiden and the Blaze Rods were basically considered obsolete until now, so it’s difficult to really believe that he would want to do this to the citizens of Sky City just because he’s jealous. Had this episode focused on why they are being brought back rather than throwing them into a whole new story, the episode would have made a little more sense.
The Wither is a unique creature in Minecraft . It never naturally occurs anywhere in the game and is immediately hostile upon being created. This skeletal monstrosity is a hybrid of three Wither Skeleton skulls and four blocks of Soul S
There’s probably a good reason people build dungeons. At first it seems like a great plan to construct a subterranean labyrinth, because maybe the kingdom needs a place to store its surplus supplies or random undesirable people. Why build a giant construct from wood and rock when there’s so much unused space underfoot, other than mining being crazy-hard to get right. The point is, eventually all that space attracts things. Big, mean, hungry things that no society can function around. Zombies and skeletons are only the start of the problem, and it doesn’t take long for an evil overlord to come along and put this undead labor to use devastating the countryside. Dungeons are an archaeological trap, useful right up to the point they’re the base for the downfall of the realm, and the ones in Minecraft Dungeons are a perfect illustration of how it all goes horribly wrong.
At this point I thank them for the interview and ask if they can send me some of the screenshots they showed me so I can put them in the write up which based on the above screenshot they obviously agreed to. I have played Minecraft, and while I can appreciate what it does and see why it has the popularity it has, I was never able to get into it. Dragon Quest Builders, on the other hand, was much more enjoyable, at least in my opinion. Perhaps it is because I am a long time Dragon Quest fan and enjoy the story component but regardless of the reason I did enjoy the time I spent with the demo. From the limited exposure I did get it seems like this really is an adventure/RPG that uses the building block mechanic and not a simple Minecraft guide clone dressed up like Dragon Quest. As a result of my time playing the demo and this discussion, I am looking forward to getting my hands on the final version and testing out my bonfire prison idea. Dragon Quest games have always had the same game designer, character designer, and composer, who are respectively Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyaman. These three have worked on the franchise for its thirty year existence and are all on board with Dragon Quest Builders.
Not in the traditional way. The character’s special power is the ability to build and create. Your character will be able to create items and equipment which in the game is like a magic power but there will be no spells like other Dragon Quest games. Monsters on the other hand will have spells they can use against.
