When you reach a destination after traveling on your horse, before you actually embark or reach the waypoint to begin the mission (or speak with a character that might initiate a mission), bring up your weapon wheel to make sure that you’re carrying the equipment you intend to bring with you on the mission ahead. Whether that’s your trusty carbine repeater and a shotgun for those brutal gunfights, or a bow and tomahawk for stealthier missions, always check when you’re by your horse to make sure that you have the right tools for the job, otherwise you’ll find yourself at a loss and may not be able to (easily) return back to your horse before the mission is over.

Unsurprisingly there are a lot of light gun games depicting the Wild West. Revolvers are on of the most iconic guns out there, and everyone knows the best parts of any Western are the shootouts. It’s a natural fit for a video game, but unfortunately, most of these games are bad. Take Lethal Enforcers II for example. This was made for arcades back when developers thought it was a cool idea to digitize actors instead of creating new character sprites. Before diving fully into my gripes with something that only has just shy over a minute of game footage that’s been shown, let me explain what made the other two games so special. Both, Red Dead Revolver/Redemption were games that touched on a part of American mythos in the best of ways. Even other cultural mythos play into what makes these games so great, with many different backgrounds showcased. Each game is a unique tail of one man’s quest deeply personal to them. Not only exploring the characters presented fully, but also putting forth some of the best storytelling for video games of such a genre at each respective time. Each felt like a true American western tale.

The third movie gets a lot of flack, but I love it. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for this Sega Genesis game. First of all, it’s oddly dark. That screenshot isn’t washed out either. In fact, I had to brighten it up to make it look like that. Gameplay wise it’s a series of time challenges to prevent disasters in time. The first mission is to prevent Clara from falling off a cliff. It’s basically a game of memory since there’s a cheap obstacle literally every few seconds. Back to the Future part III has a weird sense of humor about it that I admire. Even though the game is awful, it’s kind of something you need to see to believe. Just don’t play it yours

The Red Dead franchise succeeds because it’s playing into the most American fantasies of what the Wild West was, while keeping it grounded. It was a time were America was still getting its footing as a new nation. Things were being discovered by a people who had largely still never seen most of what the land had to offer, thus appropriately titled, the Wild West. It seemed like a hellish dreamscape where those from the east coast talked of savages and wild beast, men who idealized the same sort of lawlessness discussed among certain circles. Yet, it was none of these things, for a people having just arrived to a nation, it was much tamer than one might imagine. Instead, it was a place not overly populated and begging for people to settle its lands (I hope we see Natives in this game). The west was a place of opportunity and discovery, somewhere one could make their mark in a relatively easy way (for the time).
