While in Rhodes, you unlock the ability to sell stolen horses to a horse fence. Do not do this. It is not worth the effort. Why? Because a basic stolen horse will net you maybe $2. If you want to increase the price, you’ll have to significantly bond with the horse, and this may take a few in-game days. And your reward will be a price increase from $2 to $5. Yay. Yes, you can make more money with rarer horses, but that includes both finding and taming them, which could also take a while. Geology for Beginners is a stranger mission given to you by the maybe time-traveling Francis Sinclair, who tasks you with finding various rock carvings. Unlike the dreaded dinosaur bones which take forever, this is over in no time at all. After finding just one carving, you are paid $10 (and a bottle of bourbon). And after five, you are given a rock statue which can be sold to a fence for $50. All told, you are given a cool $60 after finding just five rock carvings, which shouldn’t take very long (provided you use a guide.) Plus you get to see all the trippy engravings, so it’s a win-

Talk about bad luck. Another one of the points of interest required for 100 percent completion, Meteor House, as its been named, can be found in New Hanover’s Roanoke Ridge, southwest of Dover Hill. Here, you’ll find a house that has been destroyed by a meteor, which you can pick up. Inside, a cult meeting has taken a dark turn, and you can find a note that gives you instructions to head to Mount Shann, then back to the shack at around 2 AM. One of the most affecting examples of this for my playthrough in Red Dead Redemption 2 was when I came across a house after finishing a race with a stranger. I went into the house curious if there was anything inside, such as the seemingly endless amount of cigarette cards. Inside, there was a father and son having a tense confrontation over the father’s wasteful habits that caused his wife to leave them. While leaving, the boy discovered my hiding place and ran to his room. The father pulled out a gun, so I naturally killed him and proceeded to loot the location as muscle memory kicked in for every other location in the game.

I don’t usually compile lists in my head of ten games because only a select few titles really keep my enthusiasm by the end of the year. However, when thinking about my backlog and the games that did come out this year, it reignited a spark in me that felt these games needed recognizing. Here are my Top 10 games for 2018:

One of the most popular pastimes of open world games is simply exploring the world itself and seeing what you come across. And Red Dead Redemption 2 is filled with secrets (and lots of gold bars.) Simply exploring the world rewards you with valuable treasures, and gold bars can be found in Limpany, south of Cotorra Springs, in the Braithewaite Manor, and in the mountains northeast of Bacchus Station. The greatest violation comes when you meet Rain Falls, a Native American chief, in Saint Denis. Having briefly encountered him during a party at the mayor’s house, he now seeks your aid to help obtain documents that report an oil reservoir underneath the reservation land. Arthur is, as usual, unwilling to help out until one of them offers payment in return. However it isn’t until he begins to compare the persecution his gang faces to the persecution the Native Americans face as somehow equal that he really begins to show his true character.

Thankfully, he eventually learns later on when Red Dead Redemption 2 shows nothing but disdain for the way the United States government and military have treated the Native Peoples that his prior statement was not true at all. However, it does show that Arthur was uninterested in helping other people unless it meant he got paid, even when it was a people group as badly treated as the Natives.

But at least, instead of 30, there’s only 10 of these. Plus, after finding them all you get a neat cutscene about Francis that can’t quite be explained. So it’s much better than the other collection-based missions. Still, it’s another side-quest completely dedicated to a boring collectible, so into the trash pile it g
