How Red Dead Redemption 2 Attempts (and Struggles) to Emulate the Modern Western

As we’re enjoying the rich intro with the plot set up, the stakes start to twist to a resoundingly silly moment. After introducing Marston and his quest to take down ex-gang brother Bill Williamson, the ex-gunslinger goes up to Williamson’s uninviting Fort Mercer in plain sight and lets Williamson know his busin

Completely free and a well-rounded sniper rifle? Count me in! This rifle is not to be messed with. Not only is its accuracy 3.4/4, but it has the damage to match. It has an almost equal level range as well, which almost makes up for the slow reload and rate of fire. Your enemies had better quake in their boots if they see you rolling up the block with this rifle because you are about to kick some cowboy behind. I haven’t come across another weapon this powerful yet and it blows my mind (I’m sure your enemies will feel the same soon enou

This repeater is also a fantastic pick for hunting but does have a slower reload speed and rate of fire, which is the only thing that stops it from being ridiculously overpowered and is instead just kinda overpowe

While this weapon does have some decent accuracy and reload speed, its damage really lets you down. This weapon is mostly used for hunting down medium to large prey and can help you out in a shootout with a large group, but you will most likely have something better on you for fighting. It seems to be a waste to just have a weapon for primarily hunting animals instead of a multi-purpose weapon that can hunt and fight inst

As Marston’s story begins to kick into gears as he recruits help to take down Bill Williamson, we have the mission A Frenchman, A Welshman, and an Irishman , we’re introduced to the scruffy and spineless character of Irish, who also happens to be an Irish

I consistently struggled in trying to figure out just what Dan Houser and his co-writers were trying to convey throughout the story in Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats Dead Redemption 2 . Whenever it appeared that some allegory was being set up, the scenarios would delve into quirkiness and involve stereotyped characters. Without detailing each one, I played three particular Stranger missions that put me off with that exact formula: the ones involving the characters of Margaret, Bertram, and the pair of Mr. Black and Mr. White. This video game, which is presented with the themes of modern Western stories, comes across more like a subpar attempt at subversion. Houser perhaps wants to satirize the caricatures of old Westerns, but ends up creating caricatures of his own. But hey, this is also coming from the same train of thought that replacing “Metlife” with “Getalife” in Grand Theft Auto IV was brilliant satire.

I always question what the role of the Western genre, with all of its baggage, can be in this day and age. Regardless of the answer, so many parts of Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s story felt like a pale imitation of more celebrated examples of the genre. If it hasn’t come already, there will come a time where this modern tale will have been told too many times. What will result is an irony where media is overstuffed with Westerns arguing that the Western shouldn’t die out.

Because of the account being deleted prior to my research and discovering this leak from years ago, I had to find it through a Reddit post from September 29, 2017 (on “r/RedDeadRedemption”). In the comments of this post, one user tells the story of the original leak getting harassment for not being credible:

He needs help from several offbeat characters yet doesn’t hesitate to do several thankless errands in return. Why doesn’t Marston (the former outlaw) just threaten these guys and get what he needs instead? He doesn’t have the time to waste and isn’t above going back to his old ways to get what he needs—aside from in this asp

Throwing knives sound cool and are impressive when used correctly. You imagine launching this sharp weapon for a fair distance and instantly landing your target. While this bad boy does indeed do decent damage and does additional damage over time, its accuracy and range could use some work. This is probably just personal opinion since I prefer guns to knives, but I don’t think they are all that gr

It is, however, discovered towards the end of Chapter 6 that Micah Bell, one of the gang members, has been feeding information to the Pinkertons. So, this part is half-true. While he isn’t a “spy” — as he remains loyal to Dutch until his death — he does get revealed towards the end of the game as working with them.

It is quite surprising to me that any artist would attempt to make a new Western in the age of HBO’s Westworld . In that show by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, historical periods such as the Old West, feudal Japan, and colonial India are distilled to technologically-advanced theme parks, where the rich and privileged can enjoy endless leisure and can live out their apparent fantasies with acts of violence and debauchery. One can almost say that the development of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the scenario presented in Westworld are analogous in those regards.
