What you get in return is a different kind of break. A brisk coastal walk followed by a warm cafe, a quiet stretch of sand to yourself, and evenings that draw in early enough to make staying in and watching the weather roll past the window feel like part of the point rather than a fallback. For anyone who’s only ever known the coast in peak season, an autumn or winter visit shows a genuinely different side of the same place, at a genuinely different price.
Booking early is less about beating a queue and more about choice. A pitch with a sea view, a caravan that sleeps six comfortably, or a week that lines up with both parents’ annual leave: these are the bookings that get taken months out, not the week before. Parks along the English coast, ours included, tend to open the following year’s summer diary not long after the current season closes, so the families who book in autumn get first pick of the following July and August.
The practical advice is the same whichever May date is the target: check the actual calendar for the year in question, since bank holiday dates move, confirm it against your children’s specific half-term dates if that’s part of the plan, and book earlier than feels necessary. May fills up quietly and then, in the specific weeks that carry a bank holiday, fills up fast.
Neither is a lesser option than the other, and mixing them across the year often makes more sense than picking one. A couple might take a short weekend break in spring or autumn and a longer week together in summer; a family might use a half-term weekend for a quick recharge and save the full week for the big summer holiday once school allows it.
The two May bank holidays also work well as shorter breaks in their own right, for anyone who doesn’t have a full week free. A long weekend built around the early May Monday, arriving Friday and leaving Tuesday, gives four days without touching much annual leave, and traffic on the roads tends to be lighter than the equivalent August bank holiday weekend.
